What do you need to do if you find yourself in a boating emergency?

• First, it’s important to stay calm. Think about your options and decide on the best course of action.
• If you have a radio, the first step is to call for help. Use the international distress signal “Mayday” to let rescuers know that you’re in trouble. Give them your location and a brief description of the problem.
• If you don’t have a radio, there are other ways to call for help. You can use flares or a mirror to signal attention. Or you can just wave your arms and shout.
• Get a good VHF radio. Your cell phone cannot broadcast your location to those who can help. 911 is only for land-based emergencies. Some radios such as the ICOM M510 have a red button for digital selective calling (DSC) to transmit your vessel information and GPS location.
• Get a PLB personal locator beacon and EPIRB Beacon to transmit your location – you may be drifting in current so you are no longer where you were when the incident happened.

The most important thing is to stay calm and take action. With a little bit of preparation, you can be ready for anything.

A VHF radio is the best way to call for help in an emergency, and it can also be used for routine communications like checking in with other boats or contacting the Coast Guard. Make sure you know how to use it before you head out.

How to Make an Emergency MAYDAY Call

A good VHF can save your life! If a boat or person is at serious and imminent risk of death, make a Mayday call. A “Pan-Pan” or “Sécurité” may be used for minor issues.

1. Make sure your VHF radio is on and the high power setting is selected
2. Select Channel 16 (or 2182kHz for MF)
3. Press the transmit button and say slowly and clearly:

“MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY. THIS IS… ” (say the name of your vessel 3 times then your MMSI number and call sign) “MY POSITION IS…” (latitude and longitude, true bearing, and distance from a known point, or general direction) “I AM…” (say nature of distress e.g. SINKING, ON FIRE). “I REQUIRE IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE. I HAVE…” (say the number of persons on board PLUS any other useful information – such as sinking, flares fired, abandoning to life raft). OVER.”

1. Now release transmit button and listen for a reply
2. Keep listening to Channel 16 for instructions
3. If you don’t hear anything then repeat the distress call

It should only be used in a real emergency situation when you have exhausted all other options and there is no other way to get help. When calling for help, give your location and a brief description of the problem so rescuers can come to your aid as quickly as possible.

When using a hand-held VHF for emergencies – be aware of their limited range:

– At sea, the range is approximately 20 miles (32 km)

– In harbors and coastal areas, the range is approximately five miles (8 km)

– In inland waterways, the range is approximately one to three miles (2-5 km)

Remember, a VHF radio is only effective if there are other boats or people nearby who can hear your call for help. If you’re in a remote area, you may need to use another method to call for help.

If you’re in an emergency situation and there are no boats or people nearby, you can use flares or a signal mirror to get attention.

• Flares: Red handheld or parachute flares are used to signal distress during the day, while white handheld or rocket flares are used at night. Once you’ve lit the flare, hold it above your head and wave it back and forth so it’s visible from as far away as possible.
• Signal mirror: A signal mirror can be used to reflect sunlight and attract attention from a distance. To use a signal mirror, hold it in front of your face and aim the shiny surface at the rescuer. Move the mirror until you see a flash of light, then hold the position and wave your hand in front of the mirror to signal that you’ve seen the rescuer.

If you’re in a life-threatening situation and there’s no way to call for help, your last resort is to abandon ship. Make sure you have a plan in place so everyone on board knows what to do in this situation. And always remember – when in doubt, call for help. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Why you should use a landing net

We all practice catch and release as much as we can. I’m not saying boat flipping fish isn’t fun or a horrible thing, but it’s not necessarily good for the fish; especially when you put them on the carpet, you flip them in, they hit the boat, they’re removing their slime from their body flopping around, hitting their head on stuff.

Many of us have had it happen where you’re going down to reach for bass and it jumps at the last second, you end up with a big treble hook in your hand, or who’s to say that it doesn’t end up in your face or when you’re down that close to the water? So, it really comes down to a safety thing.

Things do happen and if you can mitigate mistakes and accidents, it’s the best choice at the end of the day.

Do you worry about the difficulty of hooks being embedded in the net?

Don’t be — Rubber and coated mesh are modern net materials that prevent snagging while at the same time, preserving the protective slime on the fish. Nets with knots and certain materials can harm the fish you intend to release.

When you use a net for a fish with a treble hook in its face, it’s a lot easier to keep that fish under control. Get a plier on them, get that hook out, and you’re under control the whole time. That fish isn’t flopping around and throwing hooks everywhere, which puts you in danger of getting the hook in yourself, as well as that fish is gonna end up ripping holes in its own face.

One thing a lot of people will say is that they don’t want a net of fish because they don’t like getting hooks out of the net, but when you use a properly coated net – whether it’s a rubber net or nylon coated net – it handles treble hooks like a dream.

How to use conservation-minded landing nets so that you can protect our waterways

• First, always make sure that you are using the right size net for the fish you are trying to catch. If the net is too small, the fish may escape and be lost.
• Second, try to use a softer material for the netting so that it does not damage the fish. When shopping for a net, look for ones that are identified as conservation nets.
• If you intend to keep the fish, it’s better to not use a net at all. It’s only to protect fish intended to be released. However, sometimes you may need a net to get the hook out or if the fish is coming aboard for a quick photo, held with wet hands.
• And finally, always make sure to properly clean and dry your landing net after each use so that it does not spread invasive species!

Whether it’s the trophy fish or the last fish in the tournament, how many of us have lost a fish that could have easily been netted? Having a quality net readily available is a straightforward way of not getting heartbroken. A proper net with a good handle and a good bag is the safest and best way to land every fish you hook.

Effects of red tide on fishing in Florida

Red tide can have a devastating effect on fish populations. The toxins produced by the algae can kill fish, and when fish die, they decompose and release more toxins into the water. This can create a feedback loop that can decimate an entire fish population in a short period of time.

Red tide has been linked to mass die-offs of fish. Where it is intense, there can be thousands of dead fish on the shore.

Contaminated fish

The effects of red tide go beyond just killing fish. The toxins can also accumulate in the tissues of fish that don’t die outright. These contaminated fish can then be eaten by predators, which can pass the toxins up the food chain.

Exposure to the toxins

Humans can also be exposed to the toxins through contact with or being near contaminated water or by eating tainted seafood. Exposure to the toxins can cause respiratory problems, skin irritation, and gastrointestinal issues. Those at risk for respiratory issues should avoid being close to red tide areas when possible.

Certain times of the year when it is worse

Red tide is not unusual on Florida’s Gulf Coast and can affect areas where there is drainage from the Everglades such as the Stuart area. The drainage can cause algae blooms in rivers then affects the beach areas where the rivers drain. It can turn the water color green.

Red tide usually affects the West Coast of Florida but when especially intense, can travel in the Gulf Stream to affect the East Coast of Florida as well. It happens almost every year and usually in the late summer or early fall.

What people are doing to try to mitigate the damage

There are a few things that people are doing to try to mitigate the effects of red tide.

• One is to release captive-bred fish into areas that have been affected by red tide. These fish are not exposed to the toxins and can help repopulate the area.
• Another is to use aeration to increase the dissolved oxygen in the water, which can help reduce the growth of algae.
• State agencies may limit certain fish to release only for more than a year to repopulate the fish.
• In some areas where red tide is especially strong, boats are hired to remove the dead fish with dredges or boat nets.
• Florida agencies are researching the effects of Everglades drain-off water flow that contains toxins that can accelerate red tide in coastal areas. This water can contain fertilizers, septic tank runoff, and insecticides used to kill water vegetation. The state and federal government are dedicating budgets to studying and determining the best resolution. It may take years to resolve, as it is a complex and controversial issue. Even if so, there may still be a red tide that is not related to Everglades draining.

Red tide is a natural phenomenon. It’s important to be aware of the effects of red tide and avoid going to areas where red tide occurs. It may be bad in one area, then a few miles away, less intense. If fishing, look at red tide maps online to plan to fish or vacation away from it. Check ahead on the news or red tide maps to know what to expect. Again, red tide can move or it can stay.

People still go to the beaches even when there is red tide but it can make you cough and if there are a lot of dead fish on the beach, the smell is not enjoyable. It is not recommended to fish in areas where red tide is intense but you can look for other areas not affected.
