Angling and Sun Protection: What You Can Do

Although it is important to wear sunscreen when in the sun, it is especially important when angling. Sunscreen can protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays and help you stay safe while angling.

Sunscreen is just as important when angling as it is when swimming or playing sports. It can help protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays, which can cause skin cancer and other health problems.

Sunscreen is your friend!

It really doesn’t affect fishing, unless you kill the bait by putting your hands with sunscreen residue in the livewell. Use a dip net for live bait if you have sunscreen on your hands.

DON’Ts

  • If you have sunscreen on your hands, DO NOT dip them into a livewell with live bait. Sunscreen can kill all the live bait within a few minutes. If you are handling scented artificial baits or holding fish intended for release, wash your hands with dish detergent or soap first to remove any sunscreen residue.
  • Avoid using spray sunscreen on a boat. Any spray residue that lands on the boat can cause someone to slip and damage the boat’s upholstery. If that is all you have, spray yourself on the dock before boarding. Take off your sunglasses if spraying your face as spray sunscreen can damage sunglasses.

Tips for choosing the right sunscreen for angling

There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing sunscreen for angling.

  • First, you need to choose a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.
  • Second, you need to make sure the sunscreen is water-resistant.
  • Third, you need to apply the sunscreen liberally and evenly to all exposed areas of the skin.
  • And finally, you need to reapply the sunscreen every two hours, or more often if you are sweating or swimming.
  • Sunscreen is just one part of a complete sun safety plan. Apart from that, the need to wear other stuff is just as important.
  • The sun can burn your scalp so wear a hat or a hoodie, or pull your neck gator over the top of your head.
  • Long sleeve performance shirts and light or performance material long pants can also shield most of your body from sunburn.
  • Seek shade when possible.

How to apply sunscreen correctly

When applying sunscreen, be sure to cover all exposed areas of skin, including the face, neck, ears, and hands. Apply sunscreen liberally and evenly, using enough to fill a shot glass. Reapply every two hours, or more often if you are sweating or swimming.
