Fishing has always combined patience, skill, and knowledge of the water. But today, technology is helping anglers fish smarter, not harder. One of the most useful tools modern anglers are turning to is a fish identifier app.

A fish identifier can help you quickly recognize species, learn more about your catch, and make better decisions on the water.

Here are five ways a fish identifier improves your fishing experience.

1. Instantly Identify Your Catch

One of the biggest challenges anglers face is figuring out exactly what species they just caught. Many fish look similar, especially juvenile fish or species that share the same waters.

Some fish identifier apps let you simply take a photo or import a photo of your catch and instantly receive a species match. Instead of flipping through field guides or guessing, you can get an answer in seconds.

This is especially helpful when:

Fishing in new locations

Encountering unfamiliar species

Catching fish that look nearly identical

You’re just curious

With quick identification, you spend less time guessing and more time fishing.

2. Learn Important Details About Each Species

A good fish identifier also provides valuable information about the species you catch.

This may include:

Habitat and distribution

Typical size and appearance

Feeding behavior

Seasonal activity patterns

Understanding these details helps you become a more knowledgeable angler and improves your chances of catching that species again in the future.

Over time, you build a deeper understanding of how fish behave and where to find them.

3. Follow Local Fishing Regulations

Many fishing regulations depend on correct species identification. Some fish have specific:

Size limits

Bag limits

Seasonal restrictions

Catch-and-release rules

Misidentifying a fish can lead to unintentionally breaking local regulations.

Using a fish identifier helps anglers quickly confirm the species so they can follow fishing rules and protect local fisheries. It’s a simple way to stay responsible while enjoying your time on the water.

4. Discover New Species You Didn’t Know Existed

Fishing often leads to unexpected catches. A fish identifier helps turn those moments into learning opportunities.

You might discover:

Rare or unusual species, just like Nayma’s experience (watch it here).

Fish that migrate through your area seasonally

Species that look similar but behave very differently

For many anglers, identifying new fish becomes part of the fun. It turns each fishing trip into a chance to explore the diversity of aquatic life.

5. Keep a Record of Your Catches

Many fish identifier apps also allow anglers to log and track their catches.

By recording details like:

Species

Location

Date

Size

Photos

You start building your own personal fishing journal. You also get to share your wins with friends and family.

Over time, this data helps you notice patterns. Such as when certain species are most active or which locations produce the best catches. That information can make future fishing trips even more successful.

Fish Smarter With the Right Tools

Fishing will always rely on skill, patience, and experience. But fish identifier apps like FishVerify help anglers learn faster and fish more effectively.

Using a fish identifier doesn’t mean you’re replacing knowledge, it simply gives you a helpful companion on the water. Think of it as having quick access to information about your catch to make better decisions and continue building your skills as an angler.

Texas Clarifies Drone Use for Fishing, Wildlife, and Public Access Opportunities

The post Is Drone Fishing Legal in Texas? Plus Winter Trout Season Update appeared first on FishVerify.

With drones becoming more affordable and widely used, many Texas anglers have been asking the same question: Can you legally use a drone to deploy bait while fishing?

The short answer is no, and Texas Parks and Wildlife officials have now clearly explained why.

Drone Fishing in Texas: What the Law Actually Says

According to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), the use of drones – formally referred to as Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) – to assist with fishing is prohibited under federal law, not just state rules.

TPWD reviewed Title 50 of the Code of Federal Regulations § 19.11, commonly known as the Federal Airborne Hunting Act (AHA). Enacted in 1956 and enforced by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the law makes it illegal to use any aircraft to take or attempt to take wildlife.

And yes – fish are legally defined as wildlife.

Why Drones Count as “Aircraft”

Under federal definitions:

Aircraft means any contrivance used for flight in the air

Wildlife includes fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and more

Take includes pursuing, capturing, or attempting to capture wildlife

That means using a drone to drop bait offshore, beyond casting distance, or into a specific area is considered aiding in the take of wildlife – which is prohibited.

Can Texas Issue Special Permits for Drone Fishing?

No. Federal law explicitly prevents states from issuing permits that would allow aircraft-assisted sport fishing. TPWD cannot authorize drone fishing even if it wanted to.

If you’re surf fishing, bank fishing, or recreational fishing anywhere in Texas, drone-assisted bait deployment is illegal.

For the most up-to-date regulations, TPWD recommends visiting tpwd.texas.gov before heading out.

Enforcement & Reporting Violations

Texas Game Wardens are responsible for enforcing fishing, hunting, and wildlife laws across the state. If you witness a violation involving drones, fishing, or wildlife:

Call 1-800-792-GAME (4263)

Text TXOGT plus your tip to 847411

Use the Texas OGT App (iOS & Android)

Reports can be made 24/7 through Operation Game Thief, Texas’ wildlife crime-stoppers program.

Public Access Highlight: Guadalupe River Trout Fishing Opens This Winter

While drones are off-limits, Texas anglers still have plenty of exciting — and legal — opportunities this winter.

TPWD has announced free public access to a prime stretch of the Guadalupe River for rainbow trout fishing during peak stocking season.

Camp Huaco Springs: What Anglers Can Expect

Located between New Braunfels and Sattler, Camp Huaco Springs offers:

Nearly ½ mile of riverbank access

Wade fishing upstream and downstream

Alternating pools and riffles

Access to a low-water dam and deep holding pools

Launch areas for non-motorized boats, kayaks, and canoes

Public access runs December 5 through March 7, from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.

Trout Stocking Details

TPWD will stock nearly 20,000 rainbow trout in the Canyon Tailrace section of the Guadalupe River from early December through late January. This includes:

Weekly stockings

Additional fish supplied by the Water-Oriented Recreation District of Comal County

Supplemental stockings by the Guadalupe River Trout Unlimited Chapter (often larger trout)

Anglers are encouraged to check the 2025–26 Trout Stocking Schedule online before heading out.

Regulations & Licensing

Daily bag limit: 5 trout

Selecting the appropriate life jacket is an essential part of water safety. Whether you’re an experienced boater or a casual kayaker, understanding the different types of life jackets and knowing how to choose the right one can mean the difference between life and death on the water.

Let’s delve into the various types of life jackets available and offer practical advice on making an informed choice.

Different Types of Life Jackets

Offshore Life Jackets (Type I): provide the highest level of buoyancy and suit open, rough, or remote waters where rescue may take time. They can turn an unconscious person face up in the water.

Near-Shore Buoyant Vests (Type II): Suitable for calm, inland waters where a quick rescue is likely. They are less bulky than Type I vests but may not turn an unconscious wearer face up.

Flotation Aids (Type III): are comfortable for extended wear and ideal for watersports in calm waters with a high chance of quick rescue, though they do not turn an unconscious person face up.

Throwable Devices (Type IV): are meant for emergencies; you throw them to a person in the water rather than wear them.

Special Use Devices (Type V): Specific activities such as kayaking, windsurfing, or cold-weather operations often require these specialized life jackets. You must wear life jackets for them to work effectively.

How to Choose the Right Life Jacket?

Selecting the right life jacket involves several key considerations:

REQUIREMENTS

U.S. Coast Guard approved wearable life jackets on board for every person on the boat.

Boating safety advocates recommend all boaters and passengers wear a life jacket at all times while boating.

READ THE LABEL

All USCG-approved life jackets include an approval number. Look for it to ensure your life jacket meets the law requirements and is safe.

You may see a new label on the inside of new life jackets with a performance-level icon. The approved devices can be used in both the U.S. and Canada, while devices with older labels remain approved in only one country.

Life jackets you may already own may have the old “type” life jacket label (Type I–Type V).

The new label DOES NOT make obsolete life jackets with the old label (you can continue to use your life jacket as long as it is in good condition and appropriate for the activity).

RIGHT LIFE JACKET

WEAR IT—The best life jacket is one you will wear.

ACTIVITY—It should be appropriate for recreational water activity.

FIT—A snug fit is a proper fit. All straps, buckles, and zippers should be secure.

CONDITION—Life jackets with a tear, broken pieces, or buoyancy loss should be disposed of.

National Safe Boating Week is on the horizon, stretching from May 18-24 this year. Marking the commencement of the summer boating season, this week is pivotal in reminding us of the importance of boating safety.

In partnership with the National Weather Service, the National Safe Boating Council—a NOAA Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador—shines a light on essential boating safety practices through the distribution of invaluable resources such as infographics, videos, audio clips, fact sheets, and social media content.

In addition, here are 13 critical ways that can help safeguard lives:

1. Always Wear a Life Jacket

Donning a life jacket is a simple yet profoundly effective way to enhance your safety on the water. Wearing a properly fitting life jacket is essential for everyone on board, no matter their swimming ability or age. Recent innovations have made life jackets more comfortable and less bulky, ensuring that safety doesn’t come at the expense of comfort.

2. An ECOS Matters – Use It

An Engine Cut-Off Switch (ECOS) is a device that can save lives by stopping the boat’s engine should the driver fall overboard. Ensuring your boat is equipped with an ECOS and using it every time you venture out is a smart safety practice.

3. File a Float Plan

Before heading out, make it a point to inform someone trustworthy about your boating plans. Let someone know where you are going, your intended route, and when you expect to return.

Filing a float plan with a responsible person is crucial for boating safety because it ensures that someone knows your itinerary and can alert authorities if you don’t return as expected, helping to facilitate a timely rescue in case of an emergency.

4. Never Boat Under the Influence

Always ensure the skipper is sober and capable of navigating safely. Remember: alcohol and boating don’t mix! And in most states, it is against the law to operate a vessel when drinking. Even small amounts of alcohol can impair judgment, balance, and coordination on the water.

Check the Weather

Always check the weather forecast before heading out on the water and stay alert to changing conditions while boating.

Taking a Boating Safety Courses

In some states, it is required that boat operators have proof they have taken a Boating Safety Course. Learning essential skills like navigation rules and emergency handling can significantly enhance safety and enjoyment on the water.

You can find boating safety courses online through organizations like US Coast Guard and BoatUS Organization.

Navigation Lights

Check to make sure they work and be ready to use. These lights help other boaters determine your position, direction, and type of vessel, ensuring safe navigation and avoiding accidents on the water.

Have Proper Coast Guard-required Safety Equipment

Every boat should have essential safety equipment onboard, including fire extinguishers to handle potential fires, signaling devices like flares or distress flags to call for help, first aid kits for medical emergencies, and tools for basic repairs to address mechanical issues while on the water.

Know the Rules of the Waterway

Boaters need to know what the signs mean regarding navigation rules, including right-of-way, signaling, and overtaking procedures, to prevent accidents and conflicts on the water.

This includes practicing safe boating techniques. Safe boating practices include maintaining a safe speed to react to unexpected obstacles, avoiding reckless behavior like excessive speeding or erratic maneuvers, and staying alert for hazards such as submerged objects or changing weather conditions.

Be Prepared for Emergencies

This plan should include knowing how to use safety equipment such as life jackets, fire extinguishers, and signaling devices, as well as having a means to contact emergency services, such as a marine radio or mobile phone with signal coverage.

Additionally, being trained in administering first aid and having an up-to-date first aid kit onboard can be life-saving in case of injuries or medical emergencies while on the water. By preparing for emergencies in advance and knowing how to respond promptly and effectively, boaters can mitigate risks and ensure the safety of everyone onboard.

Check Your Boat

Boaters should inspect key components such as the engine, hull for any signs of damage, electrical systems, and safety equipment to ensure they are in good working order. Performing these checks regularly helps prevent potential breakdowns or safety hazards while enhancing overall boating safety and enjoyment.

Respect the Environment

This includes properly disposing of trash by using designated receptacles or taking it back to shore, avoiding spills and leaks by properly maintaining fuel and oil systems and respecting wildlife habitats by keeping a safe distance and avoiding disturbing nesting areas.

By taking these simple yet impactful actions, boaters can help protect marine ecosystems, ensure clean and safe waters for future generations, and enjoy a more sustainable boating experience.

Stay Informed

To stay informed about boating regulations, safety updates, and local conditions, boaters can utilize resources like marine radio channels for live updates and emergency communications. Additionally, websites such as those provided by the U.S. Coast Guard and local boating authorities offer valuable information on regulations, safety tips, and weather forecasts.

Smartphone apps like “Navionics” or “BoatUS” provide real-time updates on marine conditions, navigation aids, and safety alerts, making them essential tools for boaters to have onboard.

Through these guidelines and the concerted efforts of the boating community, National Safe Boating Week aims to reduce accidents and save lives on the water.

FishVerify.com is letting its members and local Boaters and Anglers in Florida be aware that there is a 5 thousand miles long patch of seaweed coming around Southern Florida.

Here are some general things that fishermen may need to keep in mind:

Safety First: The influx of seaweed could make it difficult to navigate boats in certain areas. Fishermen should exercise caution and maintain a safe distance from seaweed patches, as they may conceal obstacles or create difficult conditions for boats.

Fish Behavior: Seaweed can be a great source of food and shelter for many species of fish. Some fish may seek refuge in the seaweed, while others may be actively feeding on the organisms within. As a result, fishing near or around the seaweed could be particularly productive.

Regulation Compliance: Depending on the specific location and type of seaweed, there may be regulations limiting or prohibiting fishing in the area. Fishermen should be aware of any regulations and comply with them to avoid potential fines or other penalties.

Environmental Impacts: Large amounts of seaweed can sometimes indicate changes in ocean currents, water temperature, or other environmental factors. Fishermen should be mindful of any potential impacts on the local ecosystem and do their part to minimize negative impacts, such as avoiding trampling on fragile marine habitats or disturbing wildlife.

Overall, it’s always a good idea to stay informed and prepared when fishing in new or changing conditions.

Fishermen should monitor any updates from local authorities or fishing organizations and adjust their strategies as needed to ensure a safe and successful outing.

As always, we emphasize the importance of conservation and safe fishing practices. We hope that everyone will take this opportunity to explore this unique phenomenon while respecting our oceans and all its creatures.

You can also share this article to help keep your friends and family informed on the seaweed sighting.

Thank you for your support and happy fishing!

Drone fishing is a new and exciting way to fish. It has quickly gained in popularity, as it offers anglers a unique perspective of the water and allows them to cover more ground than traditional methods. While there are many benefits to drone fishing, there are also some drawbacks that you should be aware of before you decide if this method is right for you.

The safety aspect of drone fishing

They’re quite a dangerous device, there comes a bit of responsibility when using one of these things. It’s not just a simple case of flying this thing around, especially when it loses control and has issues with it. If you’re not competent or if you haven’t had a bit of practice, you can hurt someone, yourself, or your fishing gear so it really does pay to practice.

Pros:

It offers anglers a unique perspective of the water. You are able to see fish that you would not be able to see from the shore or from a boat. This can help you target specific fish that you may not have had the opportunity to catch otherwise. Additionally, the height at which you are able to fly your drone gives you a better view of the underwater terrain. This can be helpful in finding areas where fish are likely to congregate.

It allows you to cover more ground than traditional methods. If you are fishing in a large body of water, it can be difficult to cover all of the areas with just your boat or from the shore. However, with a drone, you can quickly and easily cover a large area. This can help you find fish that are hiding in areas that you would not be able to reach with traditional methods.

It is relatively affordable. The cost of a drone is much cheaper than the cost of a boat. Additionally, you do not need to purchase any special equipment to get started with drone fishing. All you need is a drone and a fishing rod!

Cons:

It can be difficult to control your drone. If you are not experienced in flying drones, it may take some practice to get the hang of it. Additionally, windy conditions can make it difficult to keep your drone in the air. If you are not careful, your drone could end up crashing into the water or hitting a tree!

There are some legal restrictions on where you can fly your drone. In some areas, it is not legal to fly drones near airports or overpopulated areas. Before you go drone fishing, be sure to check the local laws and regulations to make sure that you are not breaking any rules!

It can be dangerous. If you are not careful, your drone could injure someone or damage property. Be sure to use caution when flying your drone and always maintain a safe distance from people and objects.

Put in the time to get familiar with your drone and learn the ropes before you go. Consider tying a line to it, the last thing we need is for the authorities to track down drone anglers. You know the old saying, “you got to learn to walk before you can run” and I guess the same sort of principle applies to drone fishing. You need to really learn the ropes, and understand the controls and the limitations of your drone before you go out there and start bombing baits so practice, practice, practice.

So those are the pros and cons of drone fishing! What do you think? Is this something you would try? Let us know in the comments below!

Drones have been a hot topic of discussion in the news lately. While drones are widely debated in military and commercial use, a newer application is gaining attention: drone fishing. Some anglers oppose it, while others view it as a more efficient and fair approach.

Is drone fishing fair?

That depends on who you ask. Some anglers say it gives an unfair advantage by allowing access to hard-to-reach areas, while others believe it levels the playing field regardless of physical ability.

One of the first viral examples of drone fishing appeared in a 2016 YouTube video filmed in southwestern Australia, showing a drone dropping bait to attract a school of tuna and capturing global attention. The anglers were then able to catch the fish with ease.

While this video may have been one of the first examples of drone fishing, it’s certainly not the only one. In 2017, a man in Florida caught an impressive snook using a drone. And in 2019, a group of fishermen in New Zealand made headlines when they used a drone to reel in a massive 14-kilogram kingfish.

Fishing With Drones in America

Fishing with drones is currently allowed in most states in America. However, there are a few states that have banned their use. Hawaii has recently banned the use of drones for fishing, citing concerns that they can harass wildlife by chasing fish into nets or scaring them from feeding areas. While some argue this is no different from using bait or lures, others believe it gives anglers an unfair advantage. There’s also a question of whether it’s ethical to use a drone to spy on what other boats are doing.

According to the International Game Fish Association, in Florida, you may use your drone to fish in Florida as long as the line is attached to the device by either a snap or release device. This means it should release the line from the drone’s clip once the fish bites. However, you first need to register your drone with the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) before you get started.

On the other hand, some bass tournaments prohibit the use of drones by anglers to gain an unfair advantage. Some sailfish tournaments prohibit the use of drones as well as planes, ultra lights, and helicopters used to locate the fish. Another ethical question concerns the use of drones where boats are kite fishing, as a drone could get snagged in kite lines or cut them off.

While drone fishing remains largely legal, increasing pressure from conservationists and citizens may lead to stricter regulations or widespread bans to protect wildlife.

Only time will tell how the use of drones for fishing will be regulated in the future. For now, many anglers are taking advantage of this new technology and using it to catch fish in ways that were once impossible.

Do you think drone fishing should be banned? Why or why not?

On the pro side

Some anglers argue that drone fishing is actually fairer than traditional fishing methods. By enabling precise targeting and automated release of non-target or undersized catch, drones significantly reduce accidental bycatch and unnecessary harm to marine life.

On the con side

Some anglers argue that drone fishing takes away from the sport of fishing. Critics argue that drone fishing undermines traditional skill by over-relying on technology. Furthermore, the increased efficiency raises concerns about overfishing due to higher catch rates in less time.

From what we can gather, it seems that there are pros and cons to drone fishing from an angler’s perspective. In the end, it is up to each individual angler to decide whether or not they think drone fishing is fair.

So, what do you think? Is drone fishing fair? Is it something you would try? Please leave your thoughts and opinions on drone fishing in the comments below!

While you never expect the worst to happen, there are others looking to take your boat and equipment. Here are some precautions to protect yourself and your belongings.

Protecting your boat and things

It’s always a good idea to take some time to think about how you can protect your boat and belongings while you’re away on your fishing trip.

One way to do this is by investing in a good-quality storage cover for your boat. This will help to keep it clean and dry while you’re gone, and will also deter thieves from targeting your boat as a possible target.

Another way to protect your belongings is to pack them securely in waterproof bags or containers. This will help to keep them safe from the elements and any potential damage that could occur while you’re away.

Be sure to leave a detailed list of what you’ve packed with someone you trust so that they can check on your belongings while you’re gone.

Boat locks: They work by attaching to the hull of your boat and then locking it into place, making it difficult for anyone to move or steal your boat. Most boat locks are made from heavy-duty materials like stainless steel or aluminum, which makes them difficult to cut through. Some boat locks also come with GPS tracking devices, which can be helpful if your boat is stolen. Some locks can be attached to your outboards. If your boat is kept at a dock, this may deter theft.

Fishing rod, tackle box and bait container locks: designed to protect your rods, reel, tackles, and baits from being stolen while you’re not using them. They work by attaching to the rod and then locking it into place, making it difficult for anyone to remove your rod without the key. They are typically made from stainless steel or aluminum, and they often come with a built-in lock and key system. Bait container locks are designed to keep your bait fresh and secure while you’re not using them.

Why boat locks are important?

Boat locks are a great way to protect your investment. They deter thieves and vandals, and can help you keep track of your boat if it is stolen. In addition, boat locks can help you comply with insurance requirements.

What kind of lock should I use?

There are many different types of boat locks on the market. The type of lock you choose will depend on your needs and budget.

Some things to consider when choosing a boat lock:

The type of boat you have

The level of security you need

How easy the lock is to use

The price

What are some other ways to protect my boat?

In addition to using a boat lock, there are other things you can do to protect your boat.

Park in a well-lit area

Use an alarm system

Install security cameras

Hide valuables

Be aware of your surroundings

Trailer locks

There can be thieves waiting for you to launch your boat and for you to leave. You can put a lock at the front of your trailer or get a steel cable with a lock to run through the trailer’s wheels. They might also steal your tow vehicle. For that it’s best to use the lock switch on you car handle versus using your key fob where they can copy your electronic code to have access to your car. There are also electronic devices you can buy to prevent this access to unlock your tow vehicle.

Additional: Get a tracker so if your boat is stolen you can locate it. For instance AtlasTrax has alarms and methods to track your boat. Even if your boat is at a dock behind your house, thieves can approach via kayaks or other watercraft, steal your rods and reels and even your boat. Keep your boat cabin locked and store your rods inside.

Taking steps to protect your boat can seem like a lot of work, but it is worth it. By taking some simple precautions, you can deter thieves and help keep your boat safe. If you have locks and surveillance in place, thieves may be dissuaded and target another vessel or boat trailer.

What should I do if my boat or trailer is stolen?

The first thing you should do is contact the police. Have your Vin numbers, registration and your insurance handy on your cell phone as most likely that info is at home when you need it instantly. FishVerify offers a digital wallet to have all this information on your phone. They will take a report and begin investigating the theft. In addition, you should contact your insurance company and let them know what happened. They will likely need a copy of the police report in order to process your claim.

Don’t let a boat theft ruin your fishing trip. Take the time to protect your boat, and be prepared in case the worst happens. Share your experience with boat theft prevention in the comments below! What has worked for you?

When you’re out on the water, things can go from bad to worse in a hurry. That’s why it’s essential to know how to call for help in an emergency. In an emergency, every second counts. You can help ensure this by knowing how to use a VHF radio and other signaling devices.

What do you need to do if you find yourself in a boating emergency?

First, it’s important to stay calm. Think about your options and decide on the best course of action.

If you have a radio, the first step is to call for help. Use the international distress signal “Mayday” to let rescuers know that you’re in trouble. Give them your location and a brief description of the problem.

If you don’t have a radio, there are other ways to call for help. You can use flares or a mirror to signal attention. Or you can just wave your arms and shout.

Get a good VHF radio. Your cell phone cannot broadcast your location to those who can help. 911 is only for land-based emergencies. Some radios such as the ICOM M510 have a red button for digital selective calling (DSC) to transmit your vessel information and GPS location.

Get a PLB personal locator beacon and EPIRB Beacon to transmit your location – you may be drifting in current so you are no longer where you were when the incident happened.

The most important thing is to stay calm and take action. With a little bit of preparation, you can be ready for anything.

A good VHF can save lives

A VHF radio is the best way to call for help in an emergency, and it can also be used for routine communications like checking in with other boats or contacting the Coast Guard. Make sure you know how to use it before you head out.

Credits: Ladies, Let’s Go Fishing

How to Make an Emergency MAYDAY Call

A good VHF can save your life! If a boat or person is at serious and imminent risk of death, make a Mayday call. A “Pan-Pan” or “Sécurité” may be used for minor issues.

Make sure your VHF radio is on and the high power setting is selected

Select Channel 16 (or 2182kHz for MF)

Press the transmit button and say slowly and clearly:

“MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY. THIS IS… ” (say the name of your vessel 3 times then your MMSI number and call sign) “MY POSITION IS…” (latitude and longitude, true bearing, and distance from a known point, or general direction) “I AM…” (say nature of distress e.g. SINKING, ON FIRE). “I REQUIRE IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE. I HAVE…” (say the number of persons on board PLUS any other useful information – such as sinking, flares fired, abandoning to life raft). OVER.”

Now release transmit button and listen for a reply

Keep listening to Channel 16 for instructions

If you don’t hear anything then repeat the distress call

It should only be used in a real emergency situation when you have exhausted all other options and there is no other way to get help. When calling for help, give your location and a brief description of the problem so rescuers can come to your aid as quickly as possible.

When using a hand-held VHF for emergencies – be aware of their limited range:

– At sea, the range is approximately 20 miles (32 km)

– In harbors and coastal areas, the range is approximately five miles (8 km)

– In inland waterways, the range is approximately one to three miles (2-5 km)

Remember, a VHF radio is only effective if there are other boats or people nearby who can hear your call for help. If you’re in a remote area, you may need to use another method to call for help.

If you’re in an emergency situation and there are no boats or people nearby, you can use flares or a signal mirror to get attention.

Flares: Red handheld or parachute flares are used to signal distress during the day, while white handheld or rocket flares are used at night. Once you’ve lit the flare, hold it above your head and wave it back and forth so it’s visible from as far away as possible.

Signal mirror: A signal mirror can be used to reflect sunlight and attract attention from a distance. To use a signal mirror, hold it in front of your face and aim the shiny surface at the rescuer. Move the mirror until you see a flash of light, then hold the position and wave your hand in front of the mirror to signal that you’ve seen the rescuer.

If you’re in a life-threatening situation and there’s no way to call for help, your last resort is to abandon ship. Make sure you have a plan in place so everyone on board knows what to do in this situation. And always remember – when in doubt, call for help. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Have you ever used a VHF radio or other signaling device in an emergency situation? Let us know in the comments below. Until next time, have safe boating!

If you really are conservation-minded, using a landing net can be extremely beneficial for the health of the fish you intend to release after catching. You have to start paying attention to the shape of your net and the specific material that it’s made out of (knotless, rubber, etc.)

Why you should use a landing net

We all practice catch and release as much as we can. I’m not saying boat flipping fish isn’t fun or a horrible thing, but it’s not necessarily good for the fish; especially when you put them on the carpet, you flip them in, they hit the boat, they’re removing their slime from their body flopping around, hitting their head on stuff.

Many of us have had it happen where you’re going down to reach for bass and it jumps at the last second, you end up with a big treble hook in your hand, or who’s to say that it doesn’t end up in your face or when you’re down that close to the water? So, it really comes down to a safety thing.

Things do happen and if you can mitigate mistakes and accidents, it’s the best choice at the end of the day.

Do you worry about the difficulty of hooks being embedded in the net?

Don’t be — Rubber and coated mesh are modern net materials that prevent snagging while at the same time, preserving the protective slime on the fish. Nets with knots and certain materials can harm the fish you intend to release.

When you use a net for a fish with a treble hook in its face, it’s a lot easier to keep that fish under control. Get a plier on them, get that hook out, and you’re under control the whole time. That fish isn’t flopping around and throwing hooks everywhere, which puts you in danger of getting the hook in yourself, as well as that fish is gonna end up ripping holes in its own face.

One thing a lot of people will say is that they don’t want a net of fish because they don’t like getting hooks out of the net, but when you use a properly coated net – whether it’s a rubber net or nylon coated net – it handles treble hooks like a dream.

How to use conservation-minded landing nets so that you can protect our waterways

First, always make sure that you are using the right size net for the fish you are trying to catch. If the net is too small, the fish may escape and be lost.

Second, try to use a softer material for the netting so that it does not damage the fish. When shopping for a net, look for ones that are identified as conservation nets.

If you intend to keep the fish, it’s better to not use a net at all. It’s only to protect fish intended to be released. However, sometimes you may need a net to get the hook out or if the fish is coming aboard for a quick photo, held with wet hands.

And finally, always make sure to properly clean and dry your landing net after each use so that it does not spread invasive species!

Whether it’s the trophy fish or the last fish in the tournament, how many of us have lost a fish that could have easily been netted? Having a quality net readily available is a straightforward way of not getting heartbroken. A proper net with a good handle and a good bag is the safest and best way to land every fish you hook.

Next time you are heading out for a day of fishing, be sure to bring along a conservation-minded landing net! Not only you will be doing your part to protect the environment, but you will also be giving yourself the best chance for a successful fishing trip.

Red tide is a natural phenomenon that can be found in the ocean, gulf, and estuaries. It is caused by an algae bloom that produces toxins, which can kill marine life and affect humans. Red tide can be particularly bad in Florida, affecting the fishing industry significantly.

Effects of red tide on fishing in Florida

Red tide can have a devastating effect on fish populations. The toxins produced by the algae can kill fish, and when fish die, they decompose and release more toxins into the water. This can create a feedback loop that can decimate an entire fish population in a short period of time.

Red tide has been linked to mass die-offs of fish. Where it is intense, there can be thousands of dead fish on the shore.

Contaminated fish

The effects of red tide go beyond just killing fish. The toxins can also accumulate in the tissues of fish that don’t die outright. These contaminated fish can then be eaten by predators, which can pass the toxins up the food chain.

Exposure to the toxins

Humans can also be exposed to the toxins through contact with or being near contaminated water or by eating tainted seafood. Exposure to the toxins can cause respiratory problems, skin irritation, and gastrointestinal issues. Those at risk for respiratory issues should avoid being close to red tide areas when possible.

Certain times of the year when it is worse

Red tide is not unusual on Florida’s Gulf Coast and can affect areas where there is drainage from the Everglades such as the Stuart area. The drainage can cause algae blooms in rivers then affects the beach areas where the rivers drain. It can turn the water color green.

Red tide usually affects the West Coast of Florida but when especially intense, can travel in the Gulf Stream to affect the East Coast of Florida as well. It happens almost every year and usually in the late summer or early fall.

Red tide can move from one area to another. One week it can be bad in an area, the next week it is somewhere else. Or it can stay as-is for months. Below we have supplied resources for you to identify where it is and its intensity per location.

Statewide Red Tide Status Map

To see updates for locations of red tide visit: https://myfwc.com/research/redtide/statewide/

Call 866-300-9399 at any time from anywhere in Florida to hear a recording about red tide conditions throughout the state. Callers outside of Florida can dial 727-502-4956.

What people are doing to try to mitigate the damage

There are a few things that people are doing to try to mitigate the effects of red tide.

One is to release captive-bred fish into areas that have been affected by red tide. These fish are not exposed to the toxins and can help repopulate the area.

Another is to use aeration to increase the dissolved oxygen in the water, which can help reduce the growth of algae.

State agencies may limit certain fish to release only for more than a year to repopulate the fish.

In some areas where red tide is especially strong, boats are hired to remove the dead fish with dredges or boat nets.

Florida agencies are researching the effects of Everglades drain-off water flow that contains toxins that can accelerate red tide in coastal areas. This water can contain fertilizers, septic tank runoff, and insecticides used to kill water vegetation. The state and federal government are dedicating budgets to studying and determining the best resolution. It may take years to resolve, as it is a complex and controversial issue. Even if so, there may still be a red tide that is not related to Everglades draining.

Red tide is a natural phenomenon. It’s important to be aware of the effects of red tide and avoid going to areas where red tide occurs. It may be bad in one area, then a few miles away, less intense. If fishing, look at red tide maps online to plan to fish or vacation away from it. Check ahead on the news or red tide maps to know what to expect. Again, red tide can move or it can stay.

People still go to the beaches even when there is red tide but it can make you cough and if there are a lot of dead fish on the beach, the smell is not enjoyable. It is not recommended to fish in areas where red tide is intense but you can look for other areas not affected.

Do you have any experience with red tide? Let us know in the comments below.

Fishing is a great activity to enjoy with your family. It can be a fun way to get outside and spend time together, and it can also be a great way to teach your children about nature and conservation. However, it’s important to follow some safe fishing practices so that everyone has a good time and stays safe.

1. Before heading out on your fishing trip, be sure to check the weather forecast. If the conditions look dangerous, it’s best to stay home. Once you’re at the fishing spot, take a few minutes to assess the area and look for any potential hazards. If there are any large rocks or deep pools of water, make sure that everyone knows to stay away from them. If conditions are dangerous, stay home.

2. It’s also important to have the proper safety gear with you when you go fishing. Everyone in your party should have a life jacket, and it’s a good idea to bring along a first-aid kit in case of any accidents. Make sure that everyone knows how to use the safety gear properly before heading out on the water.

3. When you’re ready to start fishing, have everyone in your party bait their hooks before casting their lines into the water. Once someone has a fish on their line, make sure that they keep a tight grip on the rod and reel so that the fish doesn’t get away. Remember to release any fish that you catch unharmed back into the water.

4. Use safe fishing practices for handling the fish you catch if you wish to keep them. Bring a pair of pliers or a dehooking tool with you if you catch any fish. If the fish begin to move or jump, these tools will make hook removal much simpler while also protecting your hands and fingers from being harmed.

5. Keep an eye on your companions, as well as any other anglers or boaters that may be nearby. If someone falls into the water, make sure you know how to properly execute a rescue. Teach kids to be careful where they walk if fishing from a beach location or from a shoreline spot. Uneven surfaces and wet rocks can create slipping hazards.

6. Be aware of the animals and their natural habitats. Do not harass or disturb any animals that you may see. Clean up any abandoned fishing lines, lures, or hooks that may have been overlooked. This will help keep the area clean and safe for both people and animals.

Following these safety tips will help ensure a safe and enjoyable fishing trip for your whole family.

Happy fishing! Remember to be safe and have fun!
