Angling with Drones: What You Need To Know

Drones are becoming more and more popular, and it’s no surprise that people are starting to use them for angling. Angling with a drone can be a lot of fun, and it can also be a great way to use the current technology to get to those special fishing spots. If you’re ready to take your fishing game up a notch, read on!

The basics of angling with drones

One of the great things about fishing with a drone is that you can cover a lot of water quickly and easily. If you’re targeting a specific area, you can use your drone to deliver your line right where you want it. You can also use your drone to explore new areas from the air and find fish that you might not have been able to find from the shore level.

Drones are not used to actual reel in the fish, they are used to:

  1. Spot fish in an area or
  2. To take your line offshore (for example beach fishing) and fitted with a release clip or mechanism to drop a bait into the water.

When you’re fishing with a drone, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Check the weather: Before you head out, be sure to check the weather conditions and make sure your type of drone matches the weather conditions you will be flying in. If it’s going to be windy or rainy, it might not be the best day to go fishing with your drone.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings and make sure that you’re not going to accidentally entangle anything.
  • Be sure to follow all local regulations regarding drones and fishing.
  • Have fun! Fishing with a drone can be a great way to catch more fish and have a lot of fun at the same time.

What equipment do you need?

  • Obviously, you’ll need a drone. If you don’t already have one, be sure to do your research and find one that’s right for you.
  • You’ll need to match your fishing gear, good fishing line with a full reel allows you to use your drone to deliver your bait offshore with a release-type clip, so a line that’s strong enough to handle the extra tension to release from your drone is important.
  • A good fishing reel with an easy-to-release line from the spool will help you to easily and smoothly drone fish.
  • You’ll need some kind of bait or lure to attract the fish.

If you’re new to angling with drones, here are a few helpful tips:

  • Before you take off, be sure to familiarize yourself with your drone and its controls.

  • Think of your drone as an extended outrigger, you need to attach at least 10 feet of line with a release clip below your drone.
  • Start by activating your drone several feet above ground level and then attach your fishing line to the release clip, with your reel bail open to the release line. You can fly your drone to the spot you want to fish.
  • Once you arrive at the ideal spot simply tighten the drag on your reel to drop your line from the release clip dropping your bait into the water. Fly your drone back to shore to park for safe keeping and watch your rod as you are now fishing.

Additional:

  • Start by practicing in an area that’s easy to access and has little to no obstacles.
  • Make sure you have a good understanding of how your drone works with the release clip attached below your drone before you take it out on the water.
  • Be patient! It might take a little bit of practice to get the hang of it all the things now in motion, but once you do, you’ll be excited to explore water you could not reach before.
  • Work with a buddy, beginners find it is easier to work in pairs over trying to fly the drone and handle the rod and reel at the same time, there are a lot of things in play, and harmony between drones and allowing the line to leave the reel is important.

Problems with angling with drones:

  • You might lose your drone: If you’re not careful, there’s a chance that you could lose your drone in the water. Have a flight plan to avoid the expense of a down drone.
  • Your line might get tangled in your drone, make sure to keep enough distance between the release clip and your drone.
  • Don’t overfly your line capacity. Be aware of the distance your drone is flying to match it to the length of line left on your reel.
  • You might not catch any fish: Don’t be discouraged if you don’t catch any fish at first. It can take some practice to learn how to use your drone to effectively catch fish. Stick with it and you’ll eventually get the hang of it.

Caution:

Even if you’re an experienced drone user, it’s important to exercise caution when you’re fishing with a drone. Attaching lines and putting more things into motion over just flying a drone for aerial fun and simple observation requires multi-tasking effort. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the area before you take off, and always be aware of your surroundings. If you’re not careful, you could damage your drone, or worse, injure yourself or someone else. So please, be safe and have fun!

Now that you know the basics of angling with drones, it’s time to get out there and give it a try!
