How to Make an Emergency MAYDAY Call

A good VHF can save your life! If a boat or person is at serious and imminent risk of death, make a Mayday call. A “Pan-Pan” or “Sécurité” may be used for minor issues.

1. Make sure your VHF radio is on and the high power setting is selected

3. Press the transmit button and say slowly and clearly:

“MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY. Which kayak has more or better features? Well, that’s very subjective. What kind of features are you interested in?

• The sit-inside kayak has great features for multi-day trips or camping. It often has hatches, bow, and stern with bulkheads. Bulkheads are walls on the inside that separate the kayak into individual compartments. Ideally, dry compartments are great for multi-day tripping.
• The sit-on-top kayak tends to have features that are great for fishing. It’s an open deck, with endless opportunities for customization. That’s why the sit-on-top kayak is hands down the number one choice by kayak anglers when it comes to safety on the water by far. The biggest factors are your use of safety equipment.

That being said, in general, I think it’s fair to say that a sit-on-top kayak is a safer kayak. The reason I say that is because a sit on top kayak for:

1. It can’t swamp – if you flip this boat over anywhere on the lake or a river, you can just roll it back up and theoretically, climb right back on and start paddling again. I say theoretically because climbing onto these things from the water is actually a lot more difficult than you think and if it’s something you expect to do then make sure you practice it beforehand and see that you can actually do it because surprisingly, few people can actually do that.
2. The other thing that makes sit-on-top safer is the fact that you’re not confined or at least there’s no feeling of confinement.

There is a strong argument that in some situations, the sit-inside kayak is the safer kayak and that really only comes into play when you have the skills and knowledge to be able to make the right choices and to use the sit-inside kayak at a high level.

If I’m pushing my limits, traveling in rough water, a sit-inside kayak – if you’re skilled enough – is the safer option because it has so much better performance. Better performance = safety. If you do flip, you have the ability to actually roll the kayak which isn’t an option to sit on top kayaks.

The unfortunate truth is kayaks are big, bulky, and sometimes quite heavy, so they’re not easy to move around.

1. Sit inside kayaks tend to be significantly lighter than sit-on-top kayaks for a couple of reasons. Less plastic, fewer materials involved, and fewer features than a sit-on-top kayak. That usually makes it easier to carry and possible to carry by a single person, you can put this on your shoulder.
2. You can’t just put a sit-on-top kayak on your shoulder, combine that with the fact that it typically weighs a good 15-25 % more than a comparable sit-inside kayak. This is a two-person job; although there are ways to move it around as a single person such as using kayak carts trailers and some boats.

Final Thoughts and Tips

So, as you can see, both sit-on-top and sit-inside kayak designs have both advantages and disadvantages over the other. It really just depends on what you are looking for in a kayak and what your personal preferences are.

❖ As a result, sit-on-top kayaks are typically preferred by both beginning paddlers and kayak anglers who want a kayak with high initial stability for brief trips.

❖ Sit-inside kayaks are popular among intermediate and expert paddlers who want a fast kayak for long trips or extended camping excursions.

Sit on top kayak – it’s a kayak that you sit on top of. A sit-inside kayak is a kayak that you sit inside of. How do you choose between the two? Well, unfortunately, there’s no simple answer to that question. It really comes down to you what’s the most important to you.

We’re going to break it down and look at the differences between the two when it comes to primary uses, performance, and stability.

The first question you have to ask yourself though is what do I want from a kayak? what type of paddling do I want to do? and that’s going to really help narrow down which kayak you choose.

Primary Uses

1. Sit on top Kayak. A sit-on-top kayak is great for any recreational paddling. When the paddler is happy to give up some performance for stability, sit-on-tops are generally very stable kayaks. They also tend to be easier to get on and off so if that’s important, the sit on top is a good choice. They also don’t swamp so if you get a wave breaking over top or if they flip, they’re not going to just fill up with water. You can roll them back upright and climb back on – there’s great peace of mind that comes from that. It also makes them great for playing around in small surf or for kids playing around on a lake, but probably the main use for sit-on-tops these days is fishing. It’s like you have this enormous open boat to accessorize and store your gear, it’s just so much more fishing-friendly.

2. Sit inside Kayak. What are sit-insides good for? So, sit-inside kayaks are great for paddlers who want a little bit more performance and are willing to give up a little bit of stability for that performance. They’re also great for multi-day paddling trips camping trips because they can have a lot more storage. They’re great if you want to push your paddling a bit for more on performance paddling. For example, there are sea kayaks that are designed to do deal with rough water and open water kayaks so you can run rapids and surf waves.

Sit inside kayaks also tend to be lighter than sit-on-top kayaks which makes them easier to move around.

Performance

Now, let’s talk about performance and how a sit on top and a sit-inside compare when it comes to performing on the water. So, there’s no doubt about it, sit inside kayaks have higher performance than sit-on-top kayaks. Now there are a few reasons for that.

1. For one, you’re sitting basically on the bottom of the kayak, which means your center of gravity is much lower. That means the kayak can be narrower and still have the same type of stability that a sit-on-top kayak has. A narrower kayak is going to just travel through the water more efficiently, it’s going to glide better, and so right off the top, it has that type of advantage over a sit-on-top kayak.
2. The other major advantage a sit-inside kayak has over a sit-on-top kayak when it comes to performance is the fact that you have a lot more contact with the boat not only is your butt for the most part right against the bottom of the boat, but your legs your knees are against the sides of the boat too. You’re wrapped around by this boat and I commonly compare it to wearing a pair of flip-flops versus wearing a nice running shoe. Sit inside kayak wraps around your foot like a trail running shoe and gives you lots of support, and lots of performance, whereas in the sit-on-top kayak you’re on that top of that platform held on very loosely and you don’t have much performance in that way.

3. The third thing that makes sit inside kayaks have higher performance is the fact that they’re available in different materials. Sit-on-top kayaks are generally available as rotomolded polyethylene kayaks or plastic kayaks. They’re heavy and they take a beating but they’re just not high-performing materials. You can definitely get sit inside kayaks that are rotomolded polyethylene boats and most of them are, but you have the option to upgrade to lighter, stronger, stiffer faster materials things like thermoformed kayaks made of, or even fiberglass and kevlar kayaks. Those are the high-end kayaks that if you pay for them cost a pretty penny, but the feel of those kayaks, they glide – their carry through the water is truly remarkable.

Stability

Sit on top kayaks tend to be the most stable kayaks. Why? Well, it’s because most of the people who get a sit-on-top kayak don’t want that feeling of confinement they value stability and design sit-on-top kayaks to be very stable. That being said, sit-inside kayaks tend to have better secondary stability and what that means is when you put the boat on edge, it actually likes to be held on the edge and that’s great for performance paddling.

It’s not important if you’re not going to put your kayak on edge and have no desire to, but that’s where performance paddling and stability come together.

Sit on top kayaks may be a better choice for fishing as you are a bit higher to cast and see fish.

A sit inside kayak is more stable than sit on top as you are sitting lower in the kayak. You can look for a sit on top kayak with a seat that can be lowered to have the best of both worlds.

• Because sit-inside kayaks have a significantly lower center of gravity than sit-on-top kayaks do, they also have much more narrow beams. Consequently, they also have a much lower degree of initial stability (the tendency of a kayak to remain upright when paddling in calm seas) than sit-on-top kayaks do.

Now keep in mind, that these are just general rules. We’re talking comfort and this is where the sit-on-top kayak really excels and the reason is pretty obvious. You have so much open space, you’re not confined, you can move around on this boat stretch, total freedom of movement. On top of that, sit-on-top kayak seats tend to be a lot more luxurious. They also often offer different sitting positions – a high and a low.

Tide

One of the most important factors that can affect your fishing is the tide. The tide is created by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun on the earth’s oceans. As the tide comes in, it brings with it a surge of water that can make fish more active. This is because the increased water level gives them more places to hide and ambush their prey. The best time to fish is generally when the tide is coming in and the water is rising.

• High tide – you’re going to have higher water levels that are going to allow bait fish to push closer to that shoreline. Generally, those predators are going to follow them because they’re more comfortable there. Those predators that are on the beach don’t like really shallow water, but these higher water levels with the high tide are going to allow them to push up closer to the shoreline and hunt. This gives you ample opportunities to fish on different stretches of the pier. You can find different areas that might not be as crowded and still catch fish because again, those fish are going to be scattered along the length of the pier. If you are fishing inshore on a boat, at high tide the fish are way back into the mangroves. You need to fish when the tide is going out in that case.
• Low tide – water level is going to drop down and it’s gonna pull those baitfish away from the shoreline. Predators aren’t going to want to be there at those lower water levels and you’re gonna find a lot of predator fish at the first and second depth changes. Generally, you’re gonna have depth changes right after and before the sandbars – there’s gonna be one: at the middle of the pier depending on where you live, and two: at the end of the pier. Angling at the end of the pier at low tide, different pelagic species are gonna run the ends like mackerel. If you’re fishing the middle depth change at low tide, you’re gonna find drum, pompano, whiting – there are tons of different species you can catch. The migratory pelagics are gonna be towards the end of the pier and a lot of your bottom feeders are gonna be in the middle depth change.

Wind

It is also important to be aware of how wind can affect the tide. If there is a strong wind blowing in from the shore, it can push the water back out to sea. [stu alias=”fishverify_blog”] This can make fishing more difficult because the fish will be more spread out and harder to find.

Depending on where you live, the time of year, and which direction your pier faces – those winds can be different in how they can either improve your fishing or completely wreck it.

• Onshore winds are when the wind blows from the ocean to the shore or the land. With onshore winds, it’s a really great win for trying to catch pelagic species like mackerel because all of the bait that they hunt (e.g. threadfin, glassed minnows, cigar minnows, little baitfish) will hold really close to the top of the water column. The surface of the water is going to be really heavily influenced by the onshore wind and they’re going to get pushed closer to the shoreline, which brings them closer to the pier, and generally, if there’s more bait closer to the pier, there’s going to be more predators. It sets up a really good scenario to catch mackerel and other pelagic hunters.

With onshore winds, it’s going to increase the chop (wave height) which is generally going to murk up the water, so it can be a little bit difficult to catch some of the bottom feeders that are holding closer to the bottom.

• Inversely, offshore wind will actually clean up the water, it’s going to calm down the chop so those bottom feeders like the drum can actually feed a little bit easier. Unfortunately, what it’s going to do is it’s going to push all that bait out so you won’t have as much luck with pelagics.

There are pros and cons to each wind, it comes down to what species you want to target and adjusting it to what kind of wind you have for that day.

Try to cast downwind for your lure to go further. In higher winds use a heavier lure.

You’re retrieving your lure too rapidly, giving the fish insufficient opportunity to bite, or you’re simply fishing at the incorrect speed. You could be fishing it way too slow or way too fast. I’ve noticed that a slower retrieve generally gets more fish, but too rapid a retrieve will not bring me any. If fish is chasing your lure and you see the fish busting out, try slowing down the speed and give them a chance to eat it. If you are sight-casting, cast your lure in front of the fish – they don’t eat from their tail!

You are simply not throwing that lure enough. Make sure that you are using the proper amount of force when setting the hook. Sometimes, you could be doing everything perfectly but the fish are simply not there, you’re not there at the right tide, something’s going on with the moon, and there are so many different factors that you have to take into account. Have trust in your bait, these lures operate, they have worked in the past, and they have been proven. You must have confidence in yourself and stick to your strategy. If you are not catching, try switching to a different lure.

1. Do not get near or crowd manatees. Make sure to provide them room to swim.

10 tips for using your fishing gear in an environmentally-friendly way

1. Use bait that is caught sustainably and does not put additional strain on wild populations. For example, catch live bait responsibly, and limit the impact on other non-bait species.
2. Choose gear that is made from sustainable materials, such as biodegradable monofilament fishing lines, fishing lures, and biodegradable plastics. There are also non-toxic weights like steel, tungsten, brass, or tin.
3. When possible, use barbless hooks to minimize the harm caused to fish when they are being caught. You can use pliers to smash down the barbs to make them barbless which will make it easier to release fish. For treble hooks, you can opt to snip off two of the hooks and use one. Can also use non-stainless circle hooks. Several states and federal oversight groups have mandated anglers to use non-stainless steel circle hooks when fishing for certain species. The reason is the hooks will rust if the fish breaks the line. In the past, anglers used stainless steel hooks because they do not rust and last longer so the cost is less to the angler, but bad for the fish.
4. Make sure to properly dispose of any fishing line or other gear that you no longer need. Fishing lines can be harmful to marine life if it’s not disposed of properly. Be sure to cut up your fishing line and put it in a garbage bin, rather than leaving it in the water. Whatever you take out to fish should all be brought back with you at the end of the fishing day, leave no trace.
5. Experts suggest the less you handle a fish you will release, the better chance it will survive. If you are going to handle then handle fish with care. When handling fish, be sure to wet your hands first to avoid removing the fish’s natural slime coat. This slimy layer protects the fish from disease and parasites.
6. Use a conservation landing net. Landing nets help reduce stress on fish and prevent them from being injured. May also use a lip-type gaff (Boga style lip gaff) as another preferred landing choice.
7. Keep only what you need. Don’t overharvest! Only keep the fish that you plan to eat or use.
8. If you’re not going to keep the fish, practice catch and release. Anglers need to know and practice how the various methods for catch and release to assure the fish survives. You can’t just throw the fish back in without reviving them.
9. Use biodegradable bait bags. Biodegradable bait bags will decompose in water, rather than pollute the environment.
10. Educate yourself and others about responsible fishing gear use. One of the best ways to ensure a sustainable future for our oceans, lakes, streams, and waterways is to educate yourself and others about the importance of using responsible fishing gear.

DON’Ts

• If you have sunscreen on your hands, DO NOT dip them into a livewell with live bait. Sunscreen can kill all the live bait within a few minutes. If you are handling scented artificial baits or holding fish intended for release, wash your hands with dish detergent or soap first to remove any sunscreen residue.
• Avoid using spray sunscreen on a boat. Any spray residue that lands on the boat can cause someone to slip and damage the boat’s upholstery. If that is all you have, spray yourself on the dock before boarding. Take off your sunglasses if spraying your face as spray sunscreen can damage sunglasses.

Why you should use a landing net

We all practice catch and release as much as we can. I’m not saying boat flipping fish isn’t fun or a horrible thing, but it’s not necessarily good for the fish; especially when you put them on the carpet, you flip them in, they hit the boat, they’re removing their slime from their body flopping around, hitting their head on stuff.

Many of us have had it happen where you’re going down to reach for bass and it jumps at the last second, you end up with a big treble hook in your hand, or who’s to say that it doesn’t end up in your face or when you’re down that close to the water? So, it really comes down to a safety thing.

Things do happen and if you can mitigate mistakes and accidents, it’s the best choice at the end of the day.

Do you worry about the difficulty of hooks being embedded in the net?

Don’t be — Rubber and coated mesh are modern net materials that prevent snagging while at the same time, preserving the protective slime on the fish. Nets with knots and certain materials can harm the fish you intend to release.

When you use a net for a fish with a treble hook in its face, it’s a lot easier to keep that fish under control. Get a plier on them, get that hook out, and you’re under control the whole time. That fish isn’t flopping around and throwing hooks everywhere, which puts you in danger of getting the hook in yourself, as well as that fish is gonna end up ripping holes in its own face.

One thing a lot of people will say is that they don’t want a net of fish because they don’t like getting hooks out of the net, but when you use a properly coated net – whether it’s a rubber net or nylon coated net – it handles treble hooks like a dream.

There are a few things that people are doing to try to mitigate the effects of red tide.

• State agencies may limit certain fish to release only for more than a year to repopulate the fish.

People still go to the beaches even when there is red tide but it can make you cough and if there are a lot of dead fish on the beach, the smell is not enjoyable. It is not recommended to fish in areas where red tide is intense but you can look for other areas not affected.

Release your fish safely and without any damage

There is something oddly satisfying about watching a fish swim away after you’ve released it back into the water. It’s a feeling of relief, knowing that you’ve helped this creature thrive and live another day. There is a right and wrong way to release a fish, and using a de-hooker is one of the most effective ways to do it!

Why do some state oversight agencies require a de hooker?

A de-hooker is used because of its benefits, mainly because it is gentle on fish and can remove the hook without touching the fish. Touching a fish can remove its protective coating and shorten its life.

Some state oversight agencies require (or strongly suggest) a de hooker be used on reef species like snapper and grouper, etc. In Florida, it is required when fishing for snook, tarpon, and bonefish.

The main reason state oversight agencies require a de-hooker is to prevent fish from being injured. De hookers help remove hooks quickly and easily, without harming the fish. Many de-hookers make it possible to release without touching the fish, to preserve their protective slime for conservation purposes. Certain catfish (especially saltwater), have venom glands in their dorsal or pectoral fins that can sting upon contact and make you sick. Use a de-hooker to avoid touching.

Different types of de-hookers available on the market

There are two main types of de-hookers – manual and automatic. Manual de-hookers require you to manually remove the hook from the fish, while automatic de-hookers will do it for you.

Manual de-hooker

• First, make sure you have a good grip on the fish before you start unless you can release the fish without touching it. This will help prevent the fish from slipping out of your hands and getting injured.
• Next, if the hook is inside the fish’s mouth, gently push down on the hook until the hook is free.
• Finally, gently remove the de-hooker with a hook from the fish’s mouth and release it back into the water.

• For de-hookers with the U-shaped metal end, slide the U-shaped part down the line, keeping the line tight, then to the hook. Pull up to turn the hook upside down, then give it a shake to release the fish. This is effective when using circle hooks but can work with other hook types. Usually, with this type, you don’t have to touch the fish at all.

Automatic de-hooker

• First, read the instructions that come with your de-hooker to understand how it works and prevent you from accidentally injuring the fish.

• Next, place the de-hooker over the hook and press the button to release it. If it is a trigger de-hooker, pull the trigger once the end is engaged on the hook to tighten its grip on the hook. Gently press down on the hook if the hook is inside the mouth of the fish until the hook is free, then release. If the fish is hooked on the side of the mouth (typical for circle hooks) use the instructions above for U Shaped end de-hookers.
• Finally, gently remove the de-hooker from the fish’s mouth and release it back into the water. That’s how you can release a fish without touching it.

When making your decision, you’ll want to consider things like price, ease of use, and durability.

Once you’ve found the perfect de-hooker for your needs, you’ll be able to remove hooks quickly and easily – and most importantly, without harming the fish. If the hook is buried too far into the fish’s mouth, consider cutting the line as close to the fish as possible, especially for saltwater fish where the hook dissolves in time or for sharks, to keep you out of harm’s way.

The objective is for the fish to live – removing a hook that is very deep into the fish’s mouth can be worse for the fish than cutting the line.

Warm weather

When you’re out fishing, you’ll want to be sure to wear clothing that will protect you from the elements. The sun can be extremely harsh during warm weather, so it’s important to wear clothing that will protect you from the sun.

• Hats that provide shade for the face and some designs even offer protection for the back of the neck.
• Long-sleeved shirts and pants will help keep your skin from getting sunburned.
• A rain jacket is also a necessity, as the weather can change quickly and you don’t want to get caught in a downpour! If it is windy, even with no rain, bring one anyway as you can get soaked from the wind blowing water onto the boat sideways. An umbrella gets in the way on boats, bring a rain jacket.
• Cool and vented type of clothing for hot weather that can pull the moisture away from your body. In hot weather, areas choose microfiber quick-dry materials. Cotton or jeans do not dry quickly. Be prepared to layer up or down as it can be cool in the morning than hot in the afternoon. A button-down long sleeve performance shirt with a button on the shoulder area of the sleeve to convert to a short sleeve is helpful.
• Another tip to prevent heatstroke that works well with microfiber materials is to pour cold water on your shirt or pants to keep you cool.

If you’ll be fishing in a boat, remember that the reflected sun can be just as harmful as direct sunlight, so don’t forget to apply sunscreen to exposed skin.

Cold weather

In cold weather, dress in layers so you can adjust to changes in temperature. Keeping body heat is critical to survival when out in cold weather.

• Start with a base layer of thermal underwear to keep your body warm. Add a middle layer of fleece or wool for insulation, and top it off with a waterproof jacket.

1. The most important thing to remember when releasing a fish is to wet your hands first. This will help to avoid harming the fish by removing their protective slime coat. Once your hands are wet, you can gently hold the fish by its belly and support its body from underneath. Avoid holding the fish by its mouth or squeezing its body, as this can injure the fish.
2. If you are using a net to help support the fish, make sure that the net is made of a soft material like nylon or rubber. Avoid using metal nets, as these can damage the fish’s scales and skin. Gently lower the fish back into the water and let go. The fish should swim away on its own. If it doesn’t, you can give it a little nudge in the right direction.
3. Keep them in the water as long as possible. Don’t grab it by its gill plates or put your fingers underneath its gills. That hurts the gills. They’re very fragile and one of those forceps tools work excellently. You want to reach down and just try to grab ahold of the bend of the hook and then just pull it right out. If the fish looks like it can handle it and it’s not too stressed, just lift it out of the water.
4. Hold fish horizontally – it can damage the fish’s organs if held vertically. Do not take the fish out of the water longer than you can hold your breath. Help it recover by getting it in a nice area that doesn’t have a lot of mud or stagnant water. You can hold it by the tail and just move it back and forth gently and that makes sure that it has good water flow over the gills.
5. In the summertime, surface water temperatures get kind of warm, especially in small ponds. It’s really best to fish early in the morning when air temperatures and the surface water temperature are lowest. That gives your fish the best chance of recovery and it keeps them a lot healthier for a successful release. You can also fish in the evening time, just be extra careful about how you handle that fish and release it as quickly as possible.

Inshore and offshore fishing are the two types of fishing that may be done on open waters. What makes them different is simply how deep the water is, but the fundamentals of fishing haven’t changed. However, with that change in depth, what you’ll find on your inshore and offshore experience will be considerably different.

Difference Between Inshore and Offshore Fishing

Inshore fishing is defined as fishing that takes place within a few miles of the shoreline. This type of fishing can be done from the beach, from a pier, or by boat. Inshore fishing is often considered to be more difficult than offshore fishing because anglers must contend with obstacles such as underwater plants and rocks. If you tend to get seasick, inshore fishing is a good option as you have a constant view of the horizon. Inshore boats are usually smaller than offshore boats to be able to get into shallower water.

Offshore Fishing

Offshore fishing, on the other hand, is defined as fishing that takes place more than a few miles from the shoreline. This type of fishing is typically done from a larger boat and can be very rewarding for anglers who are willing to venture out into open water. Offshore fishing offers anglers the opportunity to catch a variety of different fish species, including some that are not found in inshore waters.

So, what is the difference between inshore and offshore fishing? Inshore fishing takes place close to shore, while offshore fishing takes place further out to sea.

Water Depth and Shore Distance

Inshore fishing, in contrast to offshore fishing, takes place in shallow water that is usually less turbulent and calmer.

While inshore, you can anticipate consistent yet changing weather in contrast to the unpredictable conditions you’ll face offshore.

Inshore:

• Within 15km-20km from shore
• Smaller boats
• 1-6 crew members
• About 30 m deep

Offshore:

• 20km+ from shore
• Long trips
• Larger boats and improved equipment
• 12-16 crew members
• Can reach as deep as 100 to more than 1000 m

During offshore trips, it typically lasts for 6hrs, even up to 12hrs. Patience is rewarded once they catch bigger fish species such as dorado, king mackerel, and bluefins during these trips.

Required Boat and Equipment

Inshore fishing does not require a lot of gear or money. Because you’ll only be dealing with inshore fish, a medium-power with 6.5 to 7 feet of fishing rod, rust-resistant fishing reel, and live baits will be enough.

You may also choose to spend some time in shallow water or utilize smaller boats that measure between 18 and 25 feet.

Offshore fishing needs larger boats that can carry heavier loads, such as big game fish. Boats with lengths of 30 to 40 feet or more are usually the best choice.

Charter fishing boats are also useful for traveling around the deep sea. These vehicles can accommodate up to 22 passengers, captain and crew included.

Charter boats: Drift boats can accommodate 20-40-plus passengers, varies per boat. Offshore charter sportfishing boats typically take six people. They are regulated by their license as to how many they can accommodate.

More Angling Tips

Inshore: You are usually more active on an inshore boat with casting. Practice casting if you can before going on a boat as you will be casting at a specific location. That will help prevent getting your lures into trees.

❖If you are prone to seasickness, inshore may be your best bet as you do not lose your view of the horizon.

❖Also, a center console boat is a good choice for offshore for the same reason. Offshore boats can go more than 1,000 ft. deep.

❖Inshore fishing isn’t always calmer. If the wind picks up be prepared for a bumpy ride. You could be running to the fishing spot at 40 mph or more.

❖Inshore boats do not typically have a toilet. Be prepared to use a bucket if you are not near a land facility.

Offshore: For offshore fishing, if you are trolling, the boat and the captain are doing most of the work.

❖You may find that you are doing a lot of sitting and waiting for the bite. Look for birds or debris when you are in the correct depth and advise others of what you see.

❖Be ready to spring into action when the reels go off as you need to be on the rod immediately.

❖It is not uncommon for offshore fishing boats to venture out in 3 to 5-foot seas. The boat will rock so be ready to steady yourself. Usually, the fish bite is better with some wave action.

❖If you are bottom-fishing, however, the waves do not affect the fish bite. For bottom fishing, you hope for fewer waves. The wind speed and current can indicate what size waves to expect. This can be changed by storms.

Inshore or offshore: Which type of fishing is better for you? Either way, both of these fishing activities will satisfy the angler in you!

1. Don’t place the rod butt under your arm. Technique is critical for success. Place it on your hip for the correct stance and power to fight the fish. If the fish is very heavy, it’s ok to reel while the rod is still in the rod holder but you may need to take it out of the holder as the fish nears.
2. For heavy fish, let the fish run in the beginning, then pump and reel when it stops taking line. Pumping means lifting the rod tip towards the sky and reeling as you slowly lower the rod tip back to the water. You can also use this technique when sitting in a fighting chair. Don’t fret if you feel you are not making progress. If you can only get half a crank when lowering the rod, eventually you will bring the fish to the boat. A lively fish may run several times and you have to reel it back again. It’s part of the excitement!
3. For how low and high to pump, use from 2 to 3 o’clock as a guide. If you raise the rod too high you risk breaking it. If too low, you lose the advantage of the drag and the rod action to retrieve the fish and risk breaking the line when when the rod is pointed directly at the fish. Pound test is the weight where a line breaks at a direct pull. However, you can catch a 40 lb. fish with 20 lb. test, for instance, by utilizing the bend in the rod, drag system and pump and reel method.
4. Keep a bend in the rod at all times. Slack is your enemy. A slack or straight-up rod means there is no pressure on the fish and the hook could easily come out of the fish’s mouth. If you don’t feel pressure, keep reeling as the fish may be swimming directly to you. You might want to practice the pump and reel technique by placing a bucket at the end of the line, letting it out, then reeling it in.
5. Have a fighting belt handy to place between the rod butt and your abdomen. Without it, you may experience pain from the pressure. The easiest fighting belts are those that can be quickly attached around your waist with velcro. Ask someone to attach it – if you do it yourself or look down you may lower the rod too much and lose the pressure on the fish. Place the belt a bit below your hips with the straps around the back of your waist so you can straighten your arms on the rod and relax when the fish is running. The other reason for this belt location is so you can use your hips to push up and raise the rod, saving your arms from tiring. This is especially helpful for women and shorter anglers.
6. Other gut protection devices that are simply inserted at the end of the rod butt are a Rod Huki (looks like a T bar) or CushIt (made from material similar to Crocs). For these, you simply insert at the rod butt and place on your hip. If you have none of these handy, fold up a fish towel, put in your pocket and place the rod butt there.
7. Keep an eye on your rod tip as when a fish jumps, the temporary slack can wrap the line around the top. When this happens you can no longer reel. Unwrap the line and keep fishing.
8. Keep your rod pointed towards the fish when it changes location. If fighting a fish while standing up, move around the boat with small steps to keep your rod pointed towards the fish. Ask other anglers to help remove rods that may be in your way. As the fish nears the boat, guide the fish towards the gaff or net, keeping it in the water and under control.
9. Once the fish is in the boat, it may flop around until you can get it in the cooler. Let a little line out until the hook can be removed. Rinse away any fish blood on the deck as it is slippery and more difficult to remove once dry.
10. After you have caught the fish, do not reel terminal tackle (sinkers, snap swivels, lure, or anything hard) all the way to the rod tip. It can break the rod’s top eye, so leave an inch of line or so. Some spinning rods have a metal loop at the bottom of the reel for securing your hook or lure. Do not put the hook directly on the eye as most are ceramic and it will cause a problematic nick. For treble hooks, you can secure them at the metal ring that attaches to the rod’s bottom eye. Be careful when placing a rod back with a treble hook – it can snag your shirt or even worse, your skin. That’s why it is safer to secure it at the bottom eye. There are plastic treble hook covers available to prevent such injuries. Let them snag the fish, not the anglers.

Catching saltwater fish is one of the most challenging but exciting endeavors in angling. With these 10 helpful tips, you may significantly improve your chances and create a fishing memory.

Do your homework before going out. Be aware of the tides and weather conditions when fishing in saltwater. A change in the tide can make a big difference in where and how you fish. And be sure to check the weather forecast before heading out, especially if you are going offshore. You don’t want to get stuck in a storm, or even worse out at sea.

Tip #7

Your fishing knot and line need to be able to take a beating from the sharp teeth fish, rocks, corals, crabs, and sharp encounters. You may need to tie a leader (heavier line or fluorocarbon) onto the end of your line for certain types of fishing. Knots need to match conditions and type of fishing your planning on doing. Do not over tackle with heavier line than needed.

Tip #8

Change monofilament regularly. Monofilament is a type of fishing line that’s popular because it’s inexpensive and easy to use. However, monofilament wears out over time due to exposure to sunlight and water. Replace your old monofilament with a new line every six months or so to avoid losing fish due to weak lines breaking under pressure from the fish. At the very least, clip off the weaker section of the line and retie the leader. For huge fish with rough lips, extra-heavy monofilament is needed.

Tip #9

Set your reel drag to match the breaking strength of the line and leader. Be prepared for a fight. Saltwater fish can be very strong and put up a good fight and it is ok to have long runs that take line off the reel – when the fish starts running, let it run and don’t reel until the fish starts to slow. Make sure you have a rod and reel that can handle the challenge. The rod and reel when matched properly will work in tandem to catch fish.

For spinning reels, don’t reel against the drag. When you hear the drag system buzzing and keep reeling, you are not retrieving any line and creating nasty curls in your line. Should that happen, let the line out from the back of the boat with nothing on the end, drag it for a few minutes then reel it back in, keeping pressure on the line with your finger so the line goes tightly on the reel with no loops or loose line.

Tip #10

Do your pre homework and understand the best way to present your bait or lure for the fish targeting. This will increase your chances of getting a bite. Fish have set feeding behaviors, learn what they are in the area you are planning to fish.

If you are trolling, there is a certain order and length to let out your lures so they don’t get tangled. Outriggers widen the area you can fish, again it’s a certain order. Research the proper trolling speed (you can troll offshore or inshore) and avoid line tangles by taking wide turns.

If casting, look behind you before you cast so you don’t injure another person.

Preparations:

1. Practice paddling and maneuvering your kayak in calm waters before heading out into rougher conditions.
2. Start off small. Choose smaller, calmer bodies of water to fish from your kayak until you get the hang of it. Once you’re more comfortable, you can venture out into larger waters.
3. Need to know how to swim if kayaking. Do not swim away from your kayak in heavy currents.
4. Be mindful of wind and current if you paddle with it and have to go against it on the way back you may be too tired to return. Keep track of how far you have paddled so you have the energy to paddle back.
5. Be aware of the weather conditions and forecast before heading out onto the water. Be sure to check the tide and weather conditions throughout the day, a crucial thing to note with any water-based activity.

Gears and Equipment:

1. Make sure you have the proper safety gear. This includes a life jacket, whistle, and flares. Wear PFD as kayaks can tip over. Passing boats can cause wakes that can tip the kayak.
2. Have everything on the kayak in a water-tight pouch or container that will float, especially your phone, camera, or electronics. Get a waterproof fanny pack so what you need is close to your body.
3. Properly outfitted kayak – this includes things like a comfortable seat, storage for your gear, and proper fishing accessories. Have your lures, hooks, pliers, or baits within an easy reaching distance. If you don’t have enough waterproof containers, consider using freezer Ziplocs for your items.
4. Another important thing is a paddle leash. Check your kayak if it includes a paddle leash. If not, consider purchasing one so that your paddle stays linked to a cleat or eyelet while you are catching a fish.
5. You might also want to bring along some food and water, as well as a first-aid kit and sunscreen.
6. Invest in an anchor. This will help to keep you in one spot and make fishing a lot easier. There’s nothing more frustrating than seeing a school of bluegill or finding the ideal mangrove nook only to constantly drift away from your target.
7. If fishing in saltwater, choose a rod and reel combo designed for saltwater. If it goes into the salt water, rinse with fresh water immediately. When you return you may need to take it apart, use reel lubricant, and may have to replace some of the gears or bearings.
8. Because you’re so much closer to the water in a kayak, you’ll probably get damp occasionally. It’s a good idea to wear moisture-wicking clothes that dry quickly and have a waterproof bag or box with you for when it’s time to change into dry clothing.
9. In saltwater, do not get too close to manatees as they can come up under your kayak and tip it. There are anchor poles you can lodge into the water’s bottom to secure your kayak, handy when fishing.
10. A handheld VHF is helpful to be able to call boaters should you be in trouble.

More Safety Tips:

1. Be aware of your surroundings and always let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back.
2. Kayak with a buddy on another kayak if possible for safety and stay together.
3. Beware of kayaking close to trees as they may house snakes or bees. A swarm of bees or wasps could attack you and everything including you could end up in the water.
4. Beware of snakes in the water, they are able to get onto your kayak. Watch for alligators and crocodiles. While it’s not likely, they could attack your kayak.
